UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) — Police in Upper Darby are looking for a man they say slashed another man’s throat during a fight in an Upper Darby bar early this morning.

The incident took place about 12:15am at the La Catina bar, on the 6800 block of Market Street in Upper Darby.

“The victim and this other guy, his friend, are at the jukebox, playing music,” says Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood, “and the doer’s in the back of the bar and words are exchanged between the two of them.”

There was no immediate information on what started the argument, but Chitwood says a man whom they identify as Miguel Escalon (below) pulled a knife and slashed the throat of a man in his 30s.

“One of our officers was able to take several towels from behind the bar area and apply pressure to his neck,” Chitwood says. “That’s probably why he’s still alive.”

But the victim was listed in extremely critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Both men, Chitwood says, are in the country illegally with no passports or other IDs, making the investigation difficult.

Police warn the suspect is armed and dangerous.
